Trust isn’t only built in code, it’s built in communication, perception, explanation, and interaction, including in the most intimate corners of digital life. From June 4–8, 2026, our team member Paula Ebner presented her research at the 76th Annual Conference of the International Communication Association (ICA) in Cape Town, one of the major international forums for communication research.
Representing our team, Intimacy with and through Technology (INTITEC), led by Dr. Jessica Szczuka, Paula presented work on romantic human-chatbot relationships and digital intimacy. A topic that sits exactly at the intersection of technology, society, media, and human understanding that the conference brought together.
It’s a great example of why trustworthy technology can’t be understood through technical performance alone: trust is negotiated in communication, including in emerging forms of digital companionship.
